The TV special, Johnny Cash: Road To Redemption, premiering Saturday at 9 p.m. ET on the Reelz cable channel explores the events that shaped the life of the legendary Man in Black.
In addition to Johnny’s struggle with addiction, arrests, religious awakening, his ABC variety show and prison concerts, the special includes a rare interview with Johnny’s daughter Cindy Cash, during which she ‘fesses up to breaking a promise she made to her late father by telling a story she she’d sworn to keep a secret.”
“Dad stopped the car, and he said, ‘You stay here,'” recalls 61-year-old Cindy, the third of Johnny’s four daughters with first wife Vivian Liberto. “He got out, and he started walking towards that man.”
Dad said, ‘Where are you headed?’ And he said, ‘I’m headed home to spend Christmas with my wife and my kids,’” she continues. “And [Dad] said, ‘How many kids have you got?’ And the man said, ‘I have three little girls.’ [Dad] said, ‘What are you doing walking?’ And he said, ‘Well, I’m hitchhiking home.’ And Dad said, ‘I don’t think you’re gonna get there by Christmas.'”
Finally, adds Cindy, “[Dad] pulled out all the cash he had in his pocket, which, I know for a fact it was a thousand dollars, ’cause he had just gone by the bank. And he gave it to this guy. And he said, ‘Get you a bus ticket. It’s too cold to walk. And don’t forget to buy your babies some presents.'”
Other interviews include close friend and actor John Schneider, Jerry Lee Lewis, drummer W.S. Holland, nephew Roy Cash and Michael Streissguth, author of Johnny Cash: The Biography.
