  • Farmers seek rootworm solutions

    After a troublesome 2023, more farmers are looking for ways to deal with corn rootworm problems.  Agronomist Brandon Furseth with Dairyland Seeds tells Brownfield much of southern Wisconsin has been dealing with more corn rootworm problems for a couple of years, but the rootworms are spreading further north. “We’re starting to see it push up here into the Lake Winnebago area. I think you could maybe see some higher pressure instances up towards the Green Bay area as well, and then the more central part of the state. ...     

  • New IL Master Farmers inducted today

    A new crop of Illinois Master Farmers are being inducted today (THU). Holly Spangler, editor of Prairie Farmer magazine, which has handed out the awards since 1925, tells Brownfield the awards… “Recognize farmers who do both a good job at producing grain and/or livestock, and that’s what they’re raising.”  She says, “But then they also are committing a lot of time to give back to their community, you know, and that may look like serving on their school board or statewide commodity organization or national agriculture commodity organization.” AUDIO: Holly Spangler – Editor @ Prairie Farmer This year’s class includes:  Gerald Thompson, who farms in northern McLean County, echoes all the recipients when he says… “Just being humbled to think that I’m in that class and it’s truly an honor to be a part of that.”  He says, “A very again humbling experience as you contemplate what that actually means and being a part of that group of people.” AUDIO: Gerald Thompson Malcolm and Susan Head farm and raise cattle with their family in Macon County.  Susan says… “We’ve put in hard work but as we have said all along, we’ve been very blessed the lord has put us in charge of the land and livestock, and we have tried to manage that as best we can and do what we thought was required of us as being those stewards,” she says. ...     

  • Most farmers in good financial shape

    An agricultural banker says most farmers will enter the growing season in good financial shape.  Commodity prices are not ideal, and margins are tight, but ag banker Daniel Duthie with Bremer Bank tells Brownfield most farmers are in good financial shape. “We’ve had a couple, three good years ahead of this. I think most guys are sitting in pretty good shape coming into this year. As long as we don’t see a two or three-year downturn, then things would get a little tighter, but going into this year, I think most guys are set up to weather the storm.” Duthie says many farmers are looking at operating loans right now. ...     

  • Ag groups give feedback on federal water legislation

    Missouri agriculture groups are giving their feedback on what should be included in the Water Resources Development Act. The federal legislation (WRDA) outlines the projects the Army Corps of Engineers will work on to improve the nation’s inland waterway system and other water resources. “We’ve got to have protection against any floods.” Missouri Corn CEO Bradley Schad says it might seem strange to talk about flooding when going through a multi-year drought, but “it takes many years to fix issues that have happened. ...
